At the IPTC Autumn Meeting 2026, the IPTC NewsCodes Working Group announced a public beta test of a new CV (Controlled Vocabulary) server at cv-beta.iptc.org.

The service hosts the IPTC’s NewsCodes, our family of controlled vocabularies used in the news media industry. Popular NewsCodes vocabularies include Media Topic, a subject vocabulary used across the news industry, particularly by news agencies; and Digital Source Type, which is used to signal whether content came directly from a camera, generative AI tool, or via human or AI edits. We actually serve over 200 vocabularies covering various aspects of sports data, news genres, audio and video codecs and much more.

After feedback and further testing, the new server is intended to replace the classic cv.iptc.org that has served us well since 2014.

Developed over many months of development, review and internal feedback, the new app offers several new features plus popular features that were available in the previous version:

  • Search across every vocabulary. Find concepts by name or definition in any of the languages we publish, across all IPTC vocabularies at once or just the ones you choose.
  • Hierarchies you can explore. Hierarchical vocabularies such as Media Topics are shown as an expandable tree, with broader and narrower concepts linked on every concept page.
  • Toggle retired concepts. Concepts that have been retired are still served, so old identifiers in your archive keep resolving. Vocabulary pages let you show or hide them using a simple checkbox.
  • JSON-LD, JSON, Turtle, RDF/XML and NewsML-G2 Knowledge Items as output formats.
  • All languages at once. Ask for lang=x-all to see every available translation side by side.
  • A machine-readable catalogue. The list of vocabularies is now available as JSON, not only as a web page.
  • HTTP and HTTPS. The server answers on both, so the http:// identifiers used in NewsCodes resolve directly.

We welcome feedback on the new server, particularly from organisations that consume the current cv.iptc.org service from software. Please contact us with any ideas or issues.
