Liaison Partners

The IPTC maintains liaison relationships with other organisations in the industry.

We currently have relationships with:

International Standards Organisation (ISO)

The IPTC is a liaison member of ISO on two technical committees:

  • ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29: Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia information
    • Working Group 1 (JPEG)
    • Working Group 11 (MPEG)
  • ISO/TC 171/SC 2: Document file formats, EDMS systems and authenticity of information

CIPA

CIPA, the Camera and Imaging Products Association, is the main industry standards body for the camera and photographic industry. Among other things, CIPA defines the Exif standard commonly used for in-camera embedded metadata. After a long informal relationship, IPTC and CIPA signed a formal Liaison Agreement in 2024.

The DPP

IPTC and the DPP (formerly known as the Digital Production Partnership) collaborate on issues relating to standards for media exchange, particularly for the broadcasting industry.

CEPIC

CEPIC, the industry association for the picture licensing industry, has had a liaison agreement with the IPTC since 2023. Previous to the liaison agreement, CEPIC was a member of IPTC.

CEPIC and IPTC cooperate on certain initiatives or projects that benefit both organisations and their members. Such has been the case on the Google Licensable badge project in 2020.

The annual CEPIC Congress was the host of the IPTC Photo Metadata Conference from 2004 to 2019.

Project Origin

The IPTC is on the Steering Committee of Project Origin, an initiative from the news and media industry to bring provenance and authenticity to news content using digital certificates.

Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA)

The IPTC has an official Liaison Agreement with C2PA, and contributes to the technical specification for content authenticity and provenance which is promoted by both Project Origin and the Content Authenticity Initiative.
