Groups of NewsCodes
IPTC groups the NewsCodes by their purpose:
- Descriptive NewsCodes … to categorize news content (text, photos, video, audio, …).
- Administrative NewsCodes … to administer news items.
- NewsML-G2 NewsCodes … to support common functionalities of NewsML-G2, EventsML-G2, SportsML-G2
- EventsML-G2 specific NewsCodes … to support specific functionalities of EventsML-G2
- NewsML 1.x NewsCodes ... to support specific functionalities of IPTC NewsML 1.x.
- Photo Metadata specific NewsCodes …to support IPTC Core and IPTC Extension
- Transmission NewsCodes … for the transmission process.

Clicking the name of a NewsCode: what you will see
A new window will open showing a list of all terms of this vocabulary.
For each entry this all is shown:
- The Concept Id (green cell): the identifier for this concept expressed by a QCode and the corresponding full URL.
- A concept type of the entry, expressed as QCode from the Nature of a Concept NewsCodes
- The date when this concept entry was created
- The date when this concept entry was modified
- The date in red when this concept entry was retired = it should not be used any longer as for some reason this concept does not refer to an active thing anymore.
- The name and the definition (blue rows) in one or more languages. The language tag of the shown language is displayed next to Name or Definition.

Clicking “N1TS” or “G2KI”: what you will get
Upon clicking N1TS:
- Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome will display XML code.
- Using Safari don’t click the acronym but use the “Save link as…” function of the context menu, save the result as a file, apply a proper name and “.xml” as extension.
Upon clicking G2K, RDFXML or RDFT
- All tested browsers – Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari – propose to download a file. Do this for saving the data locally.
Automated retrieval of NewsCodes in many formats
